|
			 Chemical Properties |

			 Black solid |

| Description | Iridium(III) chloride, represented by the formula IrCl₃, is an inorganic compound. While the anhydrous form is relatively rare, the corresponding hydrate is more commonly encountered. The anhydrous salt exhibits two polymorphs, α and β, distinguished by brown and red colors, respectively. |
|
			 Uses |

Iridium(III) chloride hydrate serves as a valuable precursor for the synthesis of other iridium compounds, including the well-known Vaska's complex, trans-[IrCl(CO)(PPh3)2]. This compound finds use as a catalyst for oxidation reactions, particularly in the presence of cerium(IV). Additionally, it plays a role in the manufacturing of electrodes. |
