Azithromycin dihydrate (Cas 117772-70-0) Usage

Azithromycin dihydrate is a medication commonly prescribed to treat various bacterial infections, including bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and infections affecting the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive organs. It is administered in the form of white crystalline powder. ZITHROMAX tablets, which contain azithromycin dihydrate, provide 600 mg of azithromycin per dose. The recommended dosage is usually once a day, taken at the same time daily, with tablets and capsules swallowed whole with water. Azithromycin capsules should be taken either at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Peak concentrations of the medication are achieved between two and a half to just over three hours after administration. A loading dose may be employed to reach steady concentrations more quickly. The medication can be dosed once daily, and it may take several days for symptoms of infection to subside.

Stability and thermophysical properties of azithromycin dihydrate

S. Timoumi b, D. Mangin a, R. Peczalski a, F. Zagrouba b, J. Andrieu a

, Arabian Journal of Chemistry Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2014, Pages 189-195

The aim of this paper was to describe the temperature effect on the stability and the thermophysical properties of azithromycin (AZ). First, the density, the heat capacity and the solubility of original (commercial) AZ were determined. Second, the original samples were heated at 50 °C and 80 °C and their PLM, DSC, TGA and XRD data were compared to those of the original AZ.

On the solid state conformation of azithromycin monohydrate and dihydrate pseudopolymorphs

José Manuel Montejo-Bernardo , Santiago Garcia-Granda , Miguel Santos Bayod-Jasanada , Lujan Llavona-Díaz and Isidro Llorente

, Zeitschrift für Kristallographie - Crystalline Materials, September 25, 2009

This paper describes the crystal structure of the azithromycin monohydrate pseudopolymorph (pseudopolymorphic forms, different solvates of the same chemical compound, azithromycin in our case) crystallised from isopropanol, solved by X-ray single crystal, and called isopropanol clathrate monohydrate (Apotex, US 6,245,903).
